Networking Your Way Into Your Next Job

Darwin’s orchid and moth have counterparts in the current job market.

The French biologist, Jean Baptiste Lamarck, postulated that as the world’s environment changed, the needs of those living in that environment changed too. In other words, the animal’s characteristics changed to survive in the new environment. Darwin took this a step further: if Living Being A changed to survive in the environment, then Living Being B (which lived off of A) needed to change as well to guarantee its survival.

When Darwin visited Madagascar, he found an orchid with a monstrous 11″ long, nectar-producing tube. Knowing that various varieties of moths adapted to feed off of various varieties of nectar-producing orchids, Darwin predicted that flitting around on Madagascar was a moth with at least an 11″ proboscis. He was right: a moth with a 12″ proboscis was discovered feeding from, and pollinating, the orchid with the 11″ tube. No one knows how long it took that moth to adapt to that orchid but it was absolutely necessary that the moth adapt if it wanted to survive. As Darwin’s moth in Madagascar found out, adaptation in a difficult world is the ONLY way to survive.

It worked for the moth and now it works for men (and women). Turn in tomorrow and find out more on how to succeed in this new job hunting market. We have discussed how animals and plants adapt and survive in an challenging ecosystem.

Lets talk about how people must adapt their job hunting techniques to survive in this challenging job market with high unemployment nationwide.

As the national economic situation and job market deteriorates, those who want to survive (and land employment) will need to change their methods for job seeking.

In April 2009, an article on stated that while the national unemployment rate was 8.5%, the actual number was closer to 15.6% unemployed when statistics on those who were not counted were added in. Those uncounted unemployed included:

• those who were underemployed, having downsized from full to part-time work
• independent contractors who were not eligible for unemployment compensation
• those who had ceased to collect unemployment benefits but were still unemployed

No one knows how long it will take today’s job seekers to adapt to this brave new world. Those who seek to survive (and get employed) will need to experiment with new techniques and strategies.

One new strategy is Advanced Networking. Tomorrow, we find out how that speeds up getting a job offer. While many people are willing to network with people they already know, most people are not quite as confident when they network with a complete stranger during a job hunt but it can, and SHOULD, be done. Why? Only 15% of all jobs are posted in a newspaper. That leaves 85% of all jobs which are filled via online websites or by personal referral.

Each situation demands a different technique or strategy to succeed. We will describe

a. The best methods to get personal referrals (and the wrong way).
b. How to get exchanged referrals.
c. Advanced Networking-which speeds up getting a job offer.

Personal Referral: Whether you are currently unemployed or facing a layoff, get out your address book (phone, e-mail, etc.), Christmas card list, and college alumni newsletter. Contact (phone or e-mail) each person, letting them know what kind of a job you are seeking. There’s a positive way of accomplishing this and there is the “not as productive” way.

Not Quite as Productive voice mail: “Hi Tom. This is Dave. My employer just announced that our division is downsizing so I’m looking for anything in management. I feel really awful about this. It’s such a pain. So, Tom, are they hiring where you are?”

Positive voice mail: “Hi Tom. This is Dave Walker. We met at the Encinitas Toastmasters The reason I am calling is that my company’s tax division is moving to Boise (or is closing because they are opting for a consultant) and I’m looking for a new opportunity. For the last five years as Senior Manager for XYZ Corporation, I’ve created and executed plans for worldwide tax planning. I came up with a viable plan which saved them over $500,000. I’m open to any opportunity in Tax Provision, Accounting, Finance, or Equity. Is your employer hiring or do you know of an employer who is?”

Exchanged referrals: In this situation, you seek to give as well as to get information. Your phone call could follow along these lines:

“Say, Morgan, how’s it going? Hey, did you hear that Amgen is hiring someone like you in organizational management consulting for the Tampa office? Check it out on their website.

“Hey, I also noticed that your company is hiring somebody for my role. Yeah, it’s true! Do you know who the real decision maker is on that one? I’d sure appreciate if you could give me a ‘warm introduction’ by e-mail. Thanks, Morgan!”

If you are best buddies with Morgan, this approach is fine. If you are merely acquaintances, you might wish to polish up your speech and make it much more professional because “Hey” is just not professional.
A professional version would be:

“Hi Morgan. This is Connie Roche. I met you at the Orange County Women’s Networkers last month.
“While I was job hunting this morning, I found that Amgen has a job posted for someone with your skill set in organizational management for the San Diego office. Naturally, I thought of you. You might want to check it out on their website.

“By the way, I noticed that your company is seeking someone with my skill set in accounting. I was wondering: do you happen to know who the decision maker is? If so, I would very much appreciate if you could give me a ‘warm introduction’ by e-mail.

Advanced Networking: After you have sent your resume to a company where you already have a contact, follow up!

• Send that person an e-mail asking for their assistance,
• include the name of the person to whom you sent your resume (who may be the hiring authority or may be screening resumes for him/her),
• the job title, department, and office location,
• the job ID number (if there is one),
• the date you sent the resume,
• and how you sent your resume. Did you send it through a website such as Monster or did you send it directly to an individual (or department) at that company? It makes a difference when they try to track it down.

Why? The quickest way for the person to whom you sent this e-mail to get rid of you is to tell you to apply through the standard channels BUT if you make it absolutely clear that you already complied with the company’s application process, then this person can’t dismiss you so easily.

With this approach, you can come across as a candidate who is confident. You are taking your job search very seriously and you are pursuing every opportunity to get hired by this company.
To summarize, this e-mail is what most people think is networking:

I’m interested in this job and I think I’m a great fit.

Here’s my resume. I’d really appreciate your help.

Or you could take the Advanced Networking approach and e-mail this:

I know I can contribute to Wexford Widgets immediately in the role of VP, Finance.

If you could help me get in contact with Weldon Davis, the hiring manager, I’d really appreciate it. The Job ID number is IAM-0708 for the VP, Finance position in Thousand Oaks, California.

I applied for it on December 7, 2009, through Just in case, I am attaching my resume.

Thank you so much!

While being this specific may seem redundant, it is not. Granted, Laurie may already know the job title and job ID number for this position but that’s not the reason to not mention it. By giving the details and by being specific, it shows Laurie and the hiring manager that you are committed about getting this job and serious about exceeding expectations. The more details which you give, the better it is because it indicates how thorough you are-you are someone who has completely considered all aspects of this job and is completely convinced that you are qualified to accomplish it. Laurie may send your e-mail directly to Weldon Davis and in that case, you come across as a very professional individual who can network his/her way to success.

This current job market requires that you adapt to this new environment and find new ways to succeed. Advanced Networking is one such way because it builds on a technique you’ve used (or at least heard about) to help you get hired and survive in today’s job market.

Simplify Your Life – Thoreau Style

I’m writing this article from my perch at the family lodge high in the mountains of Idaho. It’s a perfect place to sit still, contemplate and generally slow down for awhile. Sounds nice, doesn’t it?

It is. It’s amazing, actually. It also isn’t easy.

A few weeks ago, I moved back home to Boise, Idaho from Austin, Texas. I lived there for almost three years and some amazing things happened during that time. I found myself in a whole new way, I published a new spiritual novel (The Divine Arsonist: A Tale of Awakening), and I slo-o-o-o-o-o-wed down. If you had known me in my previous career, that last thing would sound like a miracle all by itself.

Moving isn’t ever a simple process. Moving across the country with three kids and a cat is an unimaginable tangle of details. And then there’s the coming home part itself. Returning to a town with so much personal history, so many friends who knew me in a different way, and figuring out how to best balance the whole thing while earning a living-it’s anything but simple.

So, I find myself deeply challenged to heed Thoreau’s words: “Simplify, simplify, simplify… let your affairs be as two or three”.
And what about you? Does the idea of a simple life sound like some distant paradise? Do you long to step off the blistering pace of the treadmill?

Most people tell me that they are just worn out most of the time. Frequently, I hear things like:

If I could just find a place to stop…
I just need some peace of mind…
I feel like this rat race will never end…
How do we do move from a life of death-by-a-thousand-cuts stress to simple joy and peace?

1). Master the art of YES. Start saying yes to yourself by saying no to things which will only wear you out. Is your schedule packed with obligations, appointments and duties? How many of them are really necessary? I recently sat with a man who was weary beyond belief and he told me about everything he was doing. As we looked over the list, we were both surprised by how many of them were things he had accepted without giving much thought to his own needs and well-being. His smile got bigger every time he scratched a thick line through some activity he never really cared about.

2). Cut the crap! Our stuff is nice. Houses, cars, fine clothing and social memberships all have their place, but we spend a huge chunks of our lives working to earn money for crap we will never have time to enjoy. What if you posted a lot of your stuff on Craigslist and sold it? What if you used the money to pay down debts or finance a few weeks away from work? What if you found a way to operate with one fewer car in the household? If you reduce your total expenses, maybe you can also cut the time you spend at your job and create a cushion of peace around the margin of your busy life.

3). Quit trying to do it all. Many parents are caught in the endless cycle of running children to swim lessons, ballet, football practice, soccer practice, etc., etc. Yes, it’s fantastic to be involved in our children’s lives-but what are we really teaching them by cramming every free moment with frantic activity? Do we really want them to learn that life must be jam-packed with deadlines and stress?

As we move gently but with determination toward a life of less doing, here are some of the payoffs:

You get more of what matters done. It’s a paradox, but as we eliminate meaningless doing, we accomplish much more of we desire the most in life.
Your creativity blossoms. Within you waits an inner genius waiting to express itself. I discovered that this voice speaks softly and can’t be heard beneath the rush and roar of modern life. Do you wish to write a book or learn a new language or paint or sing? Your new simplicity will allow the muse to come forward and fill the vacant time you’ve created with beauty.
You gain insight. You have enormous wisdom. Every question of your life is waiting to resolve itself, but the fractured living to which we’ve become accustomed blocks the flow. Before you read another book or schedule another therapy session, I challenge you to clear a few hours on your calendar and go sit in a sunny patch with your notebook and a pen. Ask yourself some questions and watch as the answers appear right before your eyes.

Loan Options for Your Home

Distinct lenders offer various loan tenures. Some offer whereas, others may provide a tenure of 20 years. If the tenure of your house is higher you will be paying monthly installments that are smaller each year. That happens because you are paying off your debt over such a lengthy time. But, the, the edge here is that you are paying for a lesser period of time and also building up your equity at a considerably faster speed.

Adjustable Rate Mortgage or ARM has its own perks as the interest rate keeps changing over the repayment tenure. There’s an initial period where the interest rate remains fixed. The rates may be readjusted after this interval. The payments and interest rates can rise when the loan is adjusted then. Thus, it becomes a bit uncertain at times. If you want to stay in the owned house only for a brief duration, this type of a mortgage is good for you. It is plausible that you simply get lower rates of interest than that of a mortgage that has a rate that is fixed.

Finance credit rating and clearing

Before you find the best home loan for yourself you must examine all your finances. According to several financial experts, all your mortgage payments including taxes and insurance should not be above 30 percent of your own monthly take home income. You should make sure that you’ve got complete control above your finances and preserve the equilibrium too. You may get a better pay in the very long run but planning to go for loan predicated on a hypothetical situation is certainly not advised. Comprehend you real fiscal situation and plan for a home loan correctly to prevent hassles and several issues in the long run.

It is of extreme importance that you just keep a test of your credit score too. A high credit score will certainly help you receive a good amount of the loan from the bank or the financer. The interest rate also depends a great deal on your credit score that you just improve over time. Ensure that you examine the credit reports and work towards improving your credit score, if it does badly. Reimbursing the credit card debts in time can enhance credit score. Do not max-out on your own credit card limitations and avoid making payments that are late. These hamper your credit score, in turn, making it difficult that you avail a loan number that is good with better interest rates. Additionally it is advisable that you just keep one credit card instead of using them without a suitable strategy or plan and switching credit cards regularly. It may need clear out all erroneous info from your credit report.

Get several quotes from different banks and financers to comprehend the best home loan for you. Thrift institutions, commercial banks, credit unions and mortgage companies provide home loans.

Consult with an agent in case you feel that you need help with choosing the top home loan. Brokers can help you to pick from a wide array of loan products and tenures. Additionally, you need to talk to different agents to understand the many home loans accessible the market. After all this, it’s great idea to assess backgrounds for both brokers and financers. You need to understand the length of time they’ve been in this business and how actually they’ve been doing their job up to now. Comments from people that are linked with the lender, which are unbiased, can prove to be exceptionally precious while selecting the mortgage.

Should you reveal a higher household income, and then you’ve got a better chance to get a bigger loan sum.

It’s very important before you choose a home loan product that you just do both qualitative and quantitative research. Understand your financial status and decide upon your home loan amount accordingly. Possess the house of your dreams and live with your family in peace. Prevent difficulties of staying in a rented apartment and offer your family enjoyment and the security they deserve.

The Best Car Insurance Rates

If your car insurance is due for renewal and you are considering buying another policy then this article will provide you with important facts that you should know about. Car insurance policies are getting increasingly expensive and you should do all that you can to reduce your costs. How much you have to pay for your car insurance is dictated by a variety of factors as they apply to you and your vehicle.

In this article we will examine coverage limits, your age, gender and marital status, your location and insuring other household members. All of these factors will have a great influence on how much you will have to pay for your policy.

Coverage limits are generally dictated by the price that you are willing to pay for your insurance. A higher level of coverage will generally result in higher premiums. The best way to find a good value policy is to comparison shop. Nowadays it is generally accepted that the best way to do this is by using a car insurance comparison website.

Your age, gender and marital status will have a great effect on the auto insurance rates that you are offered. Insurers rate drivers using a variety of criteria, if you are a young single male driver you will usually have to pay higher rates. If you are a middle-aged female married driver then your rates will be lower. Insurers calculate the best car insurance rates for you by comparing levels of risk. Those groups which are statistically more likely to be involved in an accident have to pay correspondingly higher rates.

Location plays an important part in deciding how much your premiums will cost. Drivers who live in an urban environment will usually pay more than those from a rural area. This is because drivers who live in cities and heavily populated areas are more likely to be involved in an accident, or to have their car stolen or vandalized. Insurers generally offer better rates if you’re able to demonstrate that you keep your vehicle in a garage at night. You may also be able to improve the security arrangements of your automobile by fitting an alarm, immobilizer and steering wheel lock.

Insuring other household members will have an influence on the cost of your policy and the best car insurance rates that you offered. If you have teenage family members living with you and they are added to your policy, then your costs will increase. This may still work out cheaper than if your teenage driver were to have a separate policy in their own name.

In conclusion, there are a variety of different factors which can affect your ability to be offered the best insurance rates. Some of these are coverage limits, how old you are, whether you are male or female and whether you are married or single. Your rates will also be affected by the area where you live and whether other household members are included in your policy.
